Material Guide

Stingray leather - also known as shagreen - is one of the world's most fascinating and durable natural materials. Unlike conventional bovine or lamb leather, stingray hide is covered in tiny, calcified bead-like scales that give it an extraordinary textural quality that cannot be replicated by any synthetic.

The most recognisable feature of polished stingray leather is the diamond eye - a pale, oval marking in the centre of the hide that corresponds to the spine of the animal. This natural mark is the quality indicator for connoisseurs, as it confirms the authenticity of the material.

In terms of durability, stingray leather is exceptionally hard-wearing. The calcified bead structure makes the surface virtually scratch-resistant compared to standard leathers, while the underlying fibrous structure provides excellent tensile strength. Many owners of stingray leather goods report that their pieces look as good decades after purchase as they did on day one.

For brand applications, stingray offers a distinctive visual identity that immediately signals craftsmanship and rarity. It is used by major luxury houses for accessories, watchbands, wallets, and signature bag styles. Its water-resistant surface also makes it a practical choice for everyday luxury items.

At JewelPelle, we source our stingray hides from sustainable fisheries in Southeast Asia. Unlike crocodile or python, stingray is not currently regulated under CITES, which simplifies import procedures for our international clients without compromising on traceability.
